The Great Game
Jul. 3rd, 2011 04:19 amBefore you all start in, no. It was not Reichenbach. I'm certain of it. The end of the episode was set up to make us think that it was, but watch. Next series will start out with barely a mention of what happened at the end of this episode. There may be a quick flashback or two in order to show how Holmes and Watson escaped without being killed, but they would have both escaped.
They're going to save Reichenbach for episode six. I'm not even going to make a promise to do something if I'm wrong, because I won't be wrong. I was, however, rather tickled to see shades of Bruce-Partington laid throughout the episode. And that whole side-plot being literally thrown away with the memory stick was a nice parallel to Holmes' line about Mycroft wasting his time. It seems as though Mycroft may have wasted all of our time with that little adventure, but it was still an enjoyable one.
That said, this episode was a very welcome change of pace from last week's, both literally and figuratively. Giving Holmes a time limit before which to solve each puzzle was genius, and kept one wondering if he was going to make it in time. Especially after the old woman got stupid and got herself blown up. It's always refreshing to see a 'hero' who doesn't always win.
I'm not sold on this Moriarty. I don't know; something about him puts me off. Will reserve judgement until after the next three episodes have aired.
I was, however, pleased to see Lestrade return. I wasn't fond of that Dimmock person, and won't particularly care if he doesn't show up ever again.
As for the ending of this episode, I thought it was perfect. It's not a question of whether they're going to survive, but how, and I think perhaps that's what makes it so maddening. It's also what makes it effective, because there are far more possibilities at hand than simply 'will they or won't they?' In this case, practically anything can happen. Although it's doubtful, a Police Box could materialise right there next to the pool. Unlikely, yes, but still possible given the circumstances.
And speaking of Police Boxes, knowledge of the Solar System would not have helped Holmes in the final puzzle, because supernovae are extra-solar events. Watson's smugness was entirely unjustified.
[rare ooc note: You lot have been doing wonderful already, but I need to ask that any actual spoilers or information for next series not be posted, as we've not yet decided whether or not we'll be playing through series 2. Thanks.]

Good call on the supernova! XD
