I might be able to believe that she was killed off by a hyperspace jump more easily had there been precedent for this sort of thing in the previous books. As it stands, it's a dreadfully boring and uncreative way of getting rid of an unwanted character.

I'm not sure. I saw something on tvtropes saying that Adams had later apologized and said he had been having a bad year.
